3 Wheel All Terrain PushchairA pushchair that is all-terrain and offers excellent maneuverability will suit you whether you are searching for a buggy for woodland walks or a stroll on the high street. These types typically have big wheels and a surprisingly strong suspension for smooth rides over bumps and rough ground.
The majority are suitable for babies and include a lie-flat seat or newborn carrycot. They also usually have foam-filled never-flat tyres to reduce maintenance.
Suspension
A truly all-terrain pushchair will have good suspension, designed to be extra smooth on rough terrain and help your child to feel comfortable and relaxed. The wheels will also be large and will usually be a puncture-proof type to prevent damage from sharp sticks or rocks.
Some all-terrain strollers also offer the option to switch between tyres with different conditions. Some all-terrain strollers have an swivel wheel that can be locked to provide stability, or left unlocked to permit greater manoeuvrability.
A few all-terrain strollers include a lockable brake handbrake that is easier to reach using your hands. This is superior to the traditional pedal that is located on the handlebars. This is an excellent feature for those who are an avid climber.
There are many strollers that have good off-road capability however they are not the best. They also have large wheels and a great suspension. They are usually less expensive than the more expensive full-on all-terrain buggy models but are perfectly suitable for trips to the dog park or short country walks.
A lot of these pushchairs are suitable from birth, either with a carrycot or a newborn-ready car seat. Be aware that the seats will not be able to lie flat when you push over bumps or dips. According to EU regulations, they only must meet minimum standards of an incline of about 150 degrees. Graco has solved this issue with its new 'comfitech in-seat suspension' that lets the seat recline at a more rounded angle for more comfort. This feature is available on the Lila XP All-Terrain Pushchair, which can be combined with an appropriate Graco Infant Car Seat to create a
three wheeler pushchair-in-one travel system.
Seat
There's a wide selection of 3-wheel all-terrain pushchairs to pick from, offering a superb off-road capability. They are ideal if you reside in the countryside or walk frequently on uneven, rough terrain. These are more robust and durable than a regular pushchair. They are equipped with unique features, like big puncture-proof tires to handle the toughest surfaces. They're usually quite wide, so could be difficult to maneuver in narrow spaces or through aisles in shops.
All-terrain buggy seats are placed either with the parent or facing. They grow with your child from newborn to toddler. It's outfitted with foam-filled "never flat' tyres to ensure an easy ride, dual frame suspension and lavish padding inside the seat unit that offers great postural support and comfort. The brand new Out 'n' About Nipper V5 is another great option. It's an all-terrain stroller that's a trailblazer. It comes with a fantastic suspension and tyres with air-filled so it's suitable to run once your child is of the right age. There are a number of all-terrain strollers that don't offer a reversible seat. However, the Oyster
lightweight 3 wheel pushchair, Venicci Tanum and egg 2, which come with this option, have a great weight limit as well as a high level of off-road capability. There are many pushchairs that are classed as all-rounders like the iCandy Pear and Bugaboo Cameleon that are able to cope with the rough terrain of the park or National Trust places but don't have quite the off-road capability of all-terrain pushchairs.
There are also crossover models that offer a good compromise between extreme off-road and high-street. They have big wheels, excellent suspension, and are built in a pushchair design, and include the option of reversible seating as well as carrycots. Some of the top models are made by brands such as iCandy Easywalker and Bugaboo.
Wheels
All-terrain pushchairs are a must if you live in a rural area or take your child for regular walks on rough terrain. These pushchairs typically have bigger back wheels than standard pushchairs which makes them better at handling bumpy off-road terrain, and ensuring a smooth ride for your child. Many also come with a sturdy suspension and puncture-proof versions to ensure they're safe for use on grass, woodland or paths through the forest or gravel tracks, as well as market town cobbles.
Certain all-terrain strollers also have a lockable wheel on the front which provides extra stability when walking over rough terrain or high kerbs. Some models have swivel wheels at the front that allow you to move the buggy more easily if you want to change direction or turn corners.
All-terrain strollers come with air-filled tyres that are excellent for tackling rough terrain. However they are more prone to punctures than the solid EVA tyres used on lighter city strollers. It's therefore worth purchasing a repair kit and spare inner tube with your pushchair. Some all-terrain models feature foam tyres, which are less prone to punctures but aren't as good at absorption of shock and can be harder to push than air-filled tyres.
The new Bugaboo Fox 5 pushchair is an excellent model of a stroller that has both foam and air filled tyres. It also has a fantastic suspension and large rear wheels that are puncture resistant and suitable for off-road usage or jogging (once your child reaches an appropriate age). The model can be used even from birth with a carrycot and a lying-flat chair.
The iCandy Peach All-Terrain is another option. It has big tires, a single steering wheel at the front, and huge tyres. It's not as versatile as the other pushchairs with all-terrain capabilities on this list, but it does handle hilly terrain and has an expansive one-handed fold, which is perfect if you're planning to be using the
double pushchair 3 wheeler for long walks or trips into the countryside. It's also suitable for babies and has a huge, extendable sun canopy and some great parent-friendly features including an easy-to-use brake pedal and a movable handlebar, as well as a large sized basket.
Stores
There are excellent all-terrain pushchairs for parents who would like to take their child off-road, but don't want to tackle Ben Nevis. They are the best of both. Find one that has all-terrain capabilities, sturdy suspension and large puncture proof wheels, but is designed in a traditional pushchair style with reversible seating and full carrycot options.
UPPAbaby's well-known Ridge all-terrain pushchair is a perfect example of this. It has a great suspension, an easy one-handed fold and a generous 10kg basket. It also has features for parents that are child-friendly, like an adjustable handlebar, a hand-operated brake on the right and a large covered storage space. The hood can be removed, and washed using cool soapy-water to avoid mould or mildew.
If you're planning on taking your all-terrain pushchair off-road it's
best lightweight 3 wheel stroller to opt for air-filled tyres instead of those with grips made of rubber. These will provide an easier ride on rough terrain, and make it easier to navigate through tight spaces. If you plan to use your all terrain pushchair to jog occasionally, ensure that the front wheel is swivelable or has a quick release feature so it can lock in place for greater stability.
To ensure that the fabric is in perfect condition, make sure they can be washed by a machine. If not, a spot cleaning with warm water and a little of gentle soap should suffice. The fabric can be dried completely outside to avoid mildew or mould.
The majority of our three wheel pushchairs can be used from birth. Look for models with an all-flat seat that is fully lie-flat and a reversible rearrest that will allow you to use it from birth all the way to when your child is about three years old. If you're planning to travel as a family of three, many are compatible with car seats thanks to built-in adaptors. If you'd prefer to leave the car at home, there are all-terrain pushchairs with a fixed front wheel that are perfect for casual strolling or light jogging like the Delta Special Needs all-terrain jogger from Delichon which comes in a range of frame and canvas sizes to fit adults and children.
